HATTIESBURG, MS — In a moment that cements his legacy in Golden Eagles history, Southern Miss University has officially announced that Christian Ostrander, the revered baseball coach and longtime figurehead of the program, will be honored with a bronze statue outside Pete Taylor Park, set to be unveiled ahead of the 2025 season.
The news has sent a wave of excitement throughout Hattiesburg and beyond, as fans, alumni, and current players celebrate one of the most influential figures in Southern Miss sports. Known simply as “Coach Oz” to many, Ostrander’s name has become synonymous with grit, discipline, and sustained excellence.

The statue, which is already in the design phase, will stand tall at the main gate of Pete Taylor Park, capturing Ostrander in a classic coaching moment — hands on hips, visor low, eyes locked on the diamond. The unveiling ceremony is scheduled to coincide with opening weekend of the 2025 college baseball season.
“Christian Ostrander has given everything to this program,” said Southern Miss Athletic Director Jeremy McClain. “His leadership, dedication, and passion for developing not just players but people, deserves to be honored in a permanent, powerful way.”
âšľ From Assistant to Architect of a Dynasty
Ostrander began his journey at Southern Miss as a pitching coach before ascending to the role of head coach, where he transformed the team into a national powerhouse. Under his guidance, Southern Miss baseball saw consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, a Super Regional run, and the cultivation of some of the most feared pitching staffs in the nation.
His recruiting prowess, relentless attention to detail, and commitment to team culture have made Southern Miss a destination for rising talent.
“Coach Ostrander’s impact goes far beyond wins and losses,” said former USM pitcher Tanner Hall. “He taught us to be leaders, brothers, and champions — on and off the field.”
