Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman has been suspended for 10 games following an incident on February 1, 2025, during a game against the Ottawa Senators. Hartman was penalized for roughing after driving Senators forward Tim Stützle’s face into the ice following a faceoff. The action resulted in a cut above Stützle’s eyebrow.
Given Hartman’s history as a repeat offender—accumulating four suspensions and seven fines over his 11-season NHL career—the NHL Department of Player Safety offered him an in-person hearing. After reviewing the incident, the league imposed a 10-game suspension, marking the longest ban in the NHL since Tom Wilson’s 20-game suspension in 2018.
Hartman contended that the fall was accidental; however, the NHL concluded that he intentionally used his arm and body weight to drive Stützle’s head into the ice. Hartman has the option to appeal the suspension. If it remains upheld, he will be eligible to return on March 9. This season, Hartman has recorded seven goals and ten assists over 48 games.
This suspension is the longest in Minnesota Wild franchise history. Hartman has 48 hours to decide whether to appeal the decision to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
The incident occurred during the second period of the game, which the Wild lost 6-0 to the Senators. Following Hartman’s ejection, the Senators capitalized on the ensuing power play, scoring three goals.
Hartman’s suspension will also result in a significant forfeiture of salary
