🏠💙 Mark Pope’s $35.6 Million Investment Transforms House into Shelter for Homeless Youth in Kentucky
Lexington, KY — In an extraordinary act of compassion and community leadership, University of Kentucky men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope has announced a $35.6 million investment to transform a large historic estate into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth across the Bluegrass State. The initiative, called “The Blue Haven Project,” aims to provide not just shelter, but hope, stability, and opportunity for some of the most vulnerable members of Kentucky’s future generation.
With this transformative contribution, Pope is extending his legacy far beyond the hardwood. Known for his motivational leadership and deep connection to Kentucky’s culture, Pope said the project has been a long-held dream rooted in his passion for empowering young people.
“We coach kids every day who’ve had every resource and opportunity,” Pope said at the press announcement outside the newly renovated property. “But there are so many youth in Kentucky who never get that shot. This isn’t just a house—it’s a foundation for new beginnings.”
From Mansion to Mission
The centerpiece of the project is a 30,000-square-foot Victorian-era estate nestled on the outskirts of Lexington. Formerly a private residence, it has been fully refurbished and repurposed into a modern, multi-use shelter capable of housing up to 80 homeless and at-risk youth aged 13 to 21.
The newly renamed Blue Haven House features:
-
🛏️ Comfortable living quarters with beds, privacy, and safety
-
📚 On-site classrooms and tutoring centers for education and GED prep
-
🍽️ A full-service kitchen with three daily meals
-
🧠 Mental health and trauma recovery counseling services
-
🧑🏫 Life skills workshops, job training, and college application support
-
🏀 Recreational areas including sports courts, fitness rooms, and arts spaces
More Than Shelter—A Launchpad for Life
The Blue Haven Project goes far beyond the traditional definition of a shelter. Partnering with local organizations, nonprofits, and school districts, it will also offer transitional programs to help youth exit homelessness for good.
Many of the teens who will benefit from Blue Haven have experienced foster care disruptions, family breakdowns, or poverty. The program is designed to give them a holistic support system—from health to education to emotional healing.
“Coach Pope’s heart is as big as Rupp Arena,” said local nonprofit leader Angela Greene. “This will change lives for generations.”
A Community Rallying Around Youth
The announcement has sparked excitement and gratitude across Kentucky. While Mark Pope has only been head coach of the Wildcats since 2024, his connection to the state has grown deeper by the month.
Fans, alumni, and local officials have already pledged support through fundraising and volunteer commitments. Pope hopes Blue Haven will become a model that inspires similar programs across the country.
“Basketball’s what I do, but this? This is what I live for,” Pope said. “Giving a young person a bed, a chance, and someone to believe in them—there’s no greater victory.”
Opening in 2026
Blue Haven is expected to open its doors in early 2026, and applications for youth services and community partners will be available in late 2025. Pope plans to remain actively involved with the program, making regular visits, hosting workshops, and even inviting players to engage with the youth as mentors.
