In a significant move ahead of the NHL trade deadline, the Dallas Stars have acquired forward Mikael Granlund and defenseman Cody Ceci from the San Jose Sharks. In return, the Sharks receive the Stars’ first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round selection in the same draft. The conditional pick will become a fourth-round selection if the Stars do not advance to the Stanley Cup Final.
Granlund, 32, has been a standout performer for the Sharks this season, leading the team with 45 points (15 goals, 30 assists) over 52 games. He also tops the team in assists and is tied for first with five power-play goals. Granlund is in the final year of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Ceci, 31, has contributed 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 54 games this season. He leads the Sharks in total ice time and is tied for second on the team with two game-winning goals. Like Granlund, Ceci is in the final year of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.
The Stars have been dealing with significant injuries, including forward Mason Marchment and defenseman Nils Lundkvist. General Manager Jim Nill emphasized that the acquisitions of Granlund and Ceci address immediate needs, bolstering both the forward group and the defense. He also highlighted the valuable postseason experience both players bring to the team.
With this trade, the Sharks now hold eight picks in the 2025 draft, including two in the first round. This move aligns with the team’s strategy to build for the future, acquiring valuable assets as they look ahead. This trade reflects the Stars’ commitment to strengthening their roster for a playoff push, while the Sharks focus on future development through draft capital.
