The Detroit Lions enter the 2025 season as one of the NFC’s top contenders, but like any team, they have both strengths and weaknesses that will shape their success. ESPN and other analysts have pointed out key areas where the Lions excel and where they need improvement.
Strengths
One of the biggest strengths of the Detroit Lions is their offensive line, which remains one of the best in the NFL. Anchored by stars like Penei Sewell and Frank Ragnow, this unit has consistently provided excellent pass protection and run blocking. This dominance in the trenches has allowed quarterback Jared Goff to operate efficiently and has created opportunities for a strong rushing attack.
Speaking of the run game, another major strength is the running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Gibbs’ explosive playmaking ability complements Montgomery’s tough, downhill running style, making them one of the most dynamic backfields in the league. With a solid offensive line in front of them, the Lions can control the clock and wear down opposing defenses.
Weaknesses
Despite their offensive firepower, the Lions’ wide receiver depth is a concern. Amon-Ra St. Brown is an elite talent, and Jameson Williams has shown flashes of potential, but beyond them, there are questions. The team lacks a true “X” receiver who can consistently win against top cornerbacks, and injuries could quickly expose the unit’s lack of depth.
Another weakness is their pass rush beyond Aidan Hutchinson. While Hutchinson is a star, the Lions need another consistent edge rusher to balance their defensive attack. Opposing teams can double-team Hutchinson, limiting his impact. Without a strong secondary pass-rushing threat, Detroit’s defense may struggle to pressure top quarterbacks in crucial moments.
Lastly, the secondary remains a work in progress. The Lions addressed this in the offseason by acquiring cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson and drafting Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw. However, it remains to be seen whether these additions will be enough to turn the secondary into a true strength.
If Detroit can improve in these key areas, they have the potential to make a deep playoff run and possibly contend for a Super Bowl.
