Everton FFP charge gives Arsenal transfer hope as price set for transfer target

Amadou Onana of Everton

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana during the January transfer window. The Belgium international has been a standout player for Sean Dyche’s side during his second season in the Premier League.

Onana, 22, was a high-profile signing for the Toffees when he arrived from Lille for £33m in 2022. After adapting to English football in his first season at Goodison Park, the midfielder has proven to be a prize asset for an improving Everton team. Arsenal are reported to be targeting a new midfielder to help boost the Gunners’ chances of mounting a title challenge. football.london has previously stated that Arsenal are exploring a possible move for Onana, amid Everton’s financial situation.

Here is a round-up of what has been said about Onana’s potential move to Arsenal:

Arsenal told Everton price tag

Arsenal have been warned that Everton are unwilling to sell Onana this month. It is reported that Onana would be ‘open’ to the prospect of joining the Gunners but that a move is not possible during the January window.

That’s according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who told Give Me Sport: “Everton want to keep hold of Amadou Onana, and if they are to change that stance they would expect £50m or more. Let’s not forget that Everton paid Lille £33m. We have seen links with Manchester United and Arsenal, but nothing is advanced and both sides would be unable to proceed in January at that kind of price even if they wanted to.”

This is despite the fact that Everton were charged with another alleged breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules on Monday. Their previous sanction, which is still under appeal, saw the team docked 10 points in November.

‘Intensive talks’ over Onana transfer

It has been claimed that Arsenal are in ‘intensive talks’ over a move for Amadou Onana.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has reported that discussions are ‘ongoing’ between the Gunners and Everton. Onana is said to be ‘keen’ on a move to Arsenal, with his priority to remain in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche stance on Everton transfers

Everton boss Sean Dyche has spoken out about the speculation surrounding Amadou Onana’s future.

When asked about Everton’s stance regarding January transfers, he replied: “We are in a position to do the best we can with the team we have got but we are in the position where if the right deal came along…

“But you’ve seen how quiet it is in January and we are certainly not thinking of players going out of the building.”

On Onana, Dyche added: “He’s been heavily linked before I was here and after. It’s just another story. He’s an Everton player so any decision that we make on players it will be us that decide.”

Onana makes transfer admission

Amadou Onana has previously spoken about the ambitions he has for his career.

The midfielder admitted that he has been the subject of interest since signing for Everton. However, his immediate focus has been to fulfil his potential with the Toffees.

“I am truly convinced that there are no upper limits for me,” the Everton midfielder told Transfermarkt in November. “That doesn’t mean to sound arrogant, but I believe in my abilities and that I can come to a top club and become a regular player there. Clubs came knocking, but I wanted to stay to develop further and become a top player at Everton, perhaps the best.”

Asked about the speculation around his future, he said: “I try to read almost nothing about it and keep it as far away from me as possible. I just want to concentrate on what’s important.”
