Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel fired back at former coach Mike Ekeler’s scathing criticisms of the program, calling the comments “unfounded” and “misinformed.”
Heupel, who has been at the helm of the Vols since 2021, addressed Ekeler’s remarks during a press conference on Wednesday. “I’m disappointed, but not surprised, by Mike’s comments,” Heupel said. “We’ve worked tirelessly to build a culture of excellence and integrity within our program, and it’s unfortunate that Mike has chosen to question that.”
Ekeler, who served as a defensive coordinator at Tennessee from 2018-2020, made headlines earlier this week with his blunt assessment of the program’s shortcomings. However, Heupel vehemently disputed Ekeler’s claims, citing the team’s improved performance on the field and its commitment to academic excellence.
“I believe our program speaks for itself,” Heupel said. “We’ve made significant strides in terms of our on-field performance, and our players have consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the classroom and in the community.”
Heupel also expressed his disappointment that Ekeler had chosen to air his grievances publicly, rather than addressing them through more constructive channels. “As coaches, we have a responsibility to support and uplift each other, even when we disagree,” Heupel said. “I’m proud of the work we’re doing here at Tennessee, and I’m confident that our program will continue to thrive despite these unfounded criticisms.”
The Volunteers will look to put the controversy behind them when they take on SEC rival Florida next Saturday.
