Howard: Playing For Leicester City Was Huge For Me

The latest Leicester City transfer news as the full-back joined the Blades on a season-long loan back in the summer.

Phil Foden is challenged by Luke Thomas during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Sheffield United at Etihad Stadium.

Sheffield United are considering sending Luke Thomas back from his loan spell with the club early, according to reports.

The City academy graduate joined the Premier League club on a season-long loan in the summer transfer window as the Blades prepared for life back in the top division. But Thomas has struggled to have made the impact he would have hoped at Bramall Lane.

The 22-year-old featured in all 12 Premier League games under Paul Heckingbottom. But after just one win and two draws the manager was replaced by Chris Wilder. Since the appointment, Thomas has made just one appearance, in Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Manchester City.

He was an unused substitute for all of the other games under Wilder, and was even left out of the squad for the 3-2 Boxing Day loss vs Luton Town. It now seems that he could be returning to the King Power Stadium earlier than expected.

According to the Sun’s Alan Nixon, Sheffield United ‘may’ send Thomas back to City when the January transfer window opens to free up a loan space in their squad. Any decision could be impacted by the seriousness of the injury to Max Lowe, who Thomas replaced in the team this weekend.

Should he return to City in January, then Thomas could find it hard to break into Enzo Maresca’s plans. He could potentially play the left-back/centre-back hybrid role in the team, but the return of Callum Doyle from injury plus James Justin’s current form means he may struggle for minutes, especially as it’s an area City could also target to bolster in the January window.

The most likely outcome would see the defender either sent out on loan to a new club or sold permanently. Leeds United were heavily linked with an interest in the summer, but City are unlikely to want to help a promotion rival in the January market.
