Mikel Arteta has given Arsenal a major boost to their chances of winning the Premier League ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City despite currently trailing in the title race. The Gunners are two points adrift of the Reds and one behind the reigning champions with some blockbuster ties still to be played.

Not much separates the three clubs and there’s expected to be plenty of movement before May. However, in the event that the Premier League title race is decided by goal difference then Arsenal already have a huge advantage over Liverpool and Manchester City.

The north Londoners ended 2023 in fourth place with a respectable, but far from impressive, goal difference of 17 – eight less than the Reds, who sat top of the tree, and seven fewer than the reigning champions in third. Determined to get a foothold in the title race, Arsenal leapt out of the gates in the New Year.

Arteta’s side thrashed Crystal Palace 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium in their first Premier League game of 2024. Arsenal have won every English top flight clash since, scoring 31 goals in seven while conceding just three.

In fact, on Monday night, Arsenal became the first and only team to win three Premier League away games in a row by five or more goals after they stormed past Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. The table also looks a lot different with the north Londoners boasting a far superior goal difference now of 45.

Liverpool and Manchester City, however, currently have goal difference records of just 39 and 35, respectively. While Arsenal may still trail in the title, fortunately for Arteta, it’s 6/1 that the title is decided by goal difference,

state that it’s 6/4 the title will be decided by one to three points, 7/4 by four to six points and 11/2 by seven to nine points. The bookmaker also has the Premier League title to be decided by 10 or more points at 20/1.

Bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “We’ve had a few nail-biting title races over recent seasons, mainly involving Manchester City and Liverpool, and with Arsenal also thrown into the mix it’s got all the makings of a fascinating end to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

“As is stands, we’re favouring a margin of between one and three points, but neutrals would love to see a repeat of the 2011/12 campaign when the two Manchester clubs finished on 89 points only for City to win with superior goal difference
