West Ham told to pay £31.5 million to sign left-back from Premier League giants

West Ham United must spend big if we want to sign a top-class left-back in the January window it seems.

The January transfer window will be a vital one for West Ham, and David Moyes needs to sign a new left-back to compete with Emerson Palmieri.

The Hammers manager has only Aaron Cresswell as cover for the Italy international, and the 34-year-old quite simply shouldn’t be playing Premier League football anymore.

One player who West Ham have been linked with persistently over the past few months is Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen, and the 21-year-old recently admitted that he could be open to leaving Stamford Bridge.

Maatsen was sensational for Burnley during a loan spell at Turf Moor last season, but he has been given limited opportunities back at Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino this term – just 199 Premier League minutes in fact (Transfermarkt).

And now he could leave the Blues. But how much will the Hammers have to pay for him?

According to football journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are demanding £31.5 million for Maatsen in the January window.

That sounds like an awful lot of money for someone so young and relatively unproven, but I truly believe that the 21-year-old Chelsea man would be well worth that fee.

Maatsen would provide proper competition and cover for Emerson, and it goes without saying that he’d be a huge upgrade on Cresswell.

The young defender is incredibly fast and possesses a really good engine. He’s very comfortable in possession and has very impressive technical ability.

The youngster bagged four goals and six assists in 39 Championship outings for the Clarets in the 2022/23 season (Who Scored).

So he’s obviously very good going forward. £31.5 million is a lot of money but in this day and age, it’s probably par for the course for a talented young player.

Maatsen is a Netherlands under-21 international, and he will undoubtedly go on to represent his country at senior level.

I believe if West Ham sign the Chelsea left-back for just over £31 million in January, he’ll be worth double that in a few year’s time.
