Auburn, AL – In a game for the ages, Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne put on a show for the ages, throwing for 5 touchdowns and running for 2 more in a record-breaking performance that led the Tigers to a 63-28 thrashing of their SEC rivals.
Thorne’s 7 total touchdowns set a new school record, breaking the previous mark of 6 set by Auburn legend Cam Newton in 2010. The junior quarterback completed 25 of 28 passes for 372 yards, with his 5 touchdown passes going to 5 different receivers.
But Thorne’s day wasn’t limited to just his arm. He also showed off his legs, running for 2 touchdowns and 73 yards on 10 carries. His first rushing touchdown came on a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter, and his second was a 23-yard scamper in the third quarter that put the Tigers up 49-21.
“Payton was unstoppable today,” said Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze. “He made plays with his arm and his legs, and he led our team with confidence and poise. He’s a special player, and we’re lucky to have him.”
Thorne’s record-breaking performance has sparked Heisman Trophy buzz around Auburn campus, and it’s hard to argue with the numbers. He’s now thrown for 15 touchdowns and run for 5 more in just 5 games this season.
As for Thorne himself, he was characteristically humble after the game. “It was a team effort today,” he said. “Our offense clicked on all cylinders, and our defense made some big plays. I’m just proud to be a part of it.”
The Tigers will look to keep their momentum going next week when they travel to face LSU in a crucial SEC showdown.
